Why am I getting an error when collaborating on an Excel-connected file?

This article addresses some of the hurdles you might encounter while collaborating slide-decks connected to Excel

When collaborating on files in the cloud, it's crucial to pay attention to the file path used in your Excel connection. If the Excel workbook is stored locally on your device, it may create challenges for others trying to work together on the same document. To enhance your collaborative experience with Grunt, consider the following tips.

If you connect Grunt to a local Excel-file, and a colleague tries to open your slide-deck to work on it, they will get an error indicating that the file cannot be found. If they in turn then connect it to a local Excel-file on their end, the same will happen when you try to work on the slide-deck.

1. Check the source-file location

Always make sure that the source-file is located on a shared space, the left screenshot shows a workbook located locally on a computer. Indicated by the📄icon. The right screenshot shows a workbook located in a cloud directory, indicated by the ☁️ icon.

2. Check for OneDrive/SharePoint-issues

When using OneDrive, a copy of the file is usually downloaded somewhere locally on your computer. If the Excel-connection points to a location on your computer specifically, others might not be able to work on the same data-set.

If you encounter issues collaborating on the same file, try pointing the Excel-connection to the file in the SharePoint-folder instead of locally in OneDrive.

3. Ensure that you have access to the file you're trying to connect

To be able to collaborate on an Excel-connected file, make sure that all collaborators have access to the Excel-file itself, and are able to open and edit it without issues directly in Excel.

If you are unable to open and edit the Excel-file on your end, there might be an access issue to the file.
