As of version 2025.2, Grunt supports new and improved waterfall charts! If you're upgrading an old waterfall chart to a new one, here are some notes to be aware of throughout the conversion process
How to upgrade
Step 1. Locate the upgrade button
If you've created Waterfall charts in Grunt versions before 2025.2, when on Grunt 2025.2+ you'll notice the following upgrade button option on the right side of your screen in the edge menu, when you select the chart:
Step 2. Upgrade! (If you want)
You'll notice that you'll get an option to upgrade either just this waterfall chart, or all previous waterfall charts. We recommend upgrading just one at a time, since you may need to make some minor changes post upgrade. Also note that it is not necessary to upgrade old waterfall charts, unless you want to access the new connector movement functionality
Step 3. Check if you're done
After clicking upgrade, your waterfall chart will be upgraded and you'll be able to move connectors! Woohoo!
If your waterfall chart wasn't linked to Excel, didn't have hardcoded sum values, and didn't exclude specific series from the overall sum, there should be nothing more you need to do. Nice!
What might change, and what to do if something goes wrong
Force to baseline buttons are now replaced with movable connectors!
You'll notice in the simple example above, the Total category was calculated with an 'S', see below:
If your data is in this format, that means that everything will upgrade as expected, and you won't need to make any changes.
However, say your data was connected to Excel and/or instead of the 'S' notation, your sums show as actual numerical values in the data editor. Take this waterfall chart that was brought in from Excel as an example:
In classic waterfall, we had force to baseline buttons that you could use to push the total column down to baseline:
Not to worry! Now, you can just move the connector to the top of the column instead!
Simply hover a connector to see the movable points:
Select the red point and start to drag it. The point(s) where you can move it to will light up:
And then simply snap it to that new point! at net value in this case means it's a sum column, not a new additive value. Now you're all set :)
Series above baseline buttons are also now replaced with movable connectors!
Before, we used to have an series above baseline buttons so you could remove a series from the total sum:
In this case, you could then exclude the top series from the total sum. This can be helpful for excluding highly uncertain projections for example.
After upgrading to Advanced Waterfall, you can still achieve all the same results, but since you can move connectors now, there's no need for the special button anymore. (Cool!)
That means you'll just need to move the connectors per segment if you want to exclude them from the sum. This also means you could choose to exclude only some (in addition to all) of the categories in a series. Here's an example for how you do it for Category A:
And then just continue until you've excluded all of the category sub series you want, e.g.:
Other things to note when upgrading
- If you had borders enabled on a series but did not change the color in Classic Waterfall, you will get a different default color upon upgrade in Advanced Waterfall
- Some older waterfall charts' connector dash style may be slightly changed when upgrading
